Summary:

Living in Central Denmark is a good choice, especially if you want to live in a modern cultural capital, which in general is 20% cheaper than Copenhagen if you consider the housing market and also has less competition on the labor market. The competition to get a place to stay is not as high as in Copenhagen and Aarhus is a cozy town.

Housing in Central Denmark

Updated 7.11.2018

Finding a place to stay in Central Denmark in Aarhus is not an easy task, but much easier than finding something in Copenhagen. You will have many benefits by living in Aarhus. You can save 20% in general on your housing. There is variation between the prices of flats near the water, central city and 30 minutes outside the city center. Housing in Aarhus will give you benefits of easier access to a social life and a connection to the locals and other expats compared to smaller cities in the region.

Rental price level

According to expatistan, a 3-rooms flat, 85m2 in a normal area in Aarhus costs 1067 Euro pr. month.

Where to look?

Aarhus is quite good choice. It is internationalized, good for students, there are many companies - and there are different districts in Aarhus such as the center of the city with shopping, bars and cafés all over. Frederiksbjerg is a district in the inner part of Aarhus looking like something from the 1800s. Latiner-kvarteret (latin quarters) is a hip place for hanging out. Trøjborg is an expensive village area in the northern part of Aarhus on a hill. Aarhus Ø (east) is more fashionable and expensive with sea view and with new and expensive buildings.

Web sites

Private rent out of rooms/rentals within the average price level can for instance be found on findaroommate.dk or on local groups on facebook. There are other sites and apps for renting, buying and selling flats like dba.dk, but the site is in Danish. It can be hard to know which site to trust. In general, it is advisable not to believe an offer, which is extremely cheap, looks like a scam and asks for money through Western Union.

In general, it is easier to find something outside the city center of Aarhus, which will take shorter time to find a place and you get a better price.
